At Stakeford Primary School we have produced an exciting curriculum aimed to enthuse our children with a hands-on approach to learning. The curriculum links subjects purposefully and progressively together through interesting and stimulating topics with a child centred focus. We strive to reach beyond the school walls and use local resources to enhance and enrich the children’s learning opportunities.
In Key Stage 1, we cover nine topics over the year while Key Stage 2 covers six. We run a two year cycle to facilitate collaborative learning across Key Stages, keeping the activities fresh and new. We feel that children should know the subjects that are being taught within the topics and make it clear which subject they are learning. We endeavour to use skills taught in core curriculum areas in other subjects to embed children’s understanding.
English, Mathematics and Science are taught following the New National Curriculum document as discreet subjects, making links to the topics wherever possible. We aim to make lessons as interactive as possible for the children, engaging different learning styles which engage all abilities and needs.
We follow the Oxford Reading Tree scheme for reading in school and support this with other reading books, including the Flying Boot series. Guided reading is integral to teaching children key skills and texts are chosen carefully to support these activities.
At Stakeford we believe that technology is an integral part of our lives, both at home and at school. Computing is taught as both a discreet subject, as well as being used to enhance all aspects of the curriculum.
We follow the SEAL programmes of study to support PSHE in school. We also offer children opportunities to share their ideas in class and whole school time. We encourage older children to take on responsibilities with specific roles within the school. We welcome and encourage parents and members of the local community to take an active role in school life.
We ensure that the Northumberland guidelines are adhered to for RE and engage in daily acts of worship.
We encourage children to lead healthy and active lifestyles. Our PE curriculum has been planned to coincide with School Sports Partnership events in the local community to encourage engagement and sportsmanship. We have links with dedicated School Sports Coordinators who deliver lessons alongside teachers.
We are a musical school and have weekly whole school singing sessions. We follow a scheme of work called Charanga. We encourage an enjoyment of music and incorporate it into lessons where we can, such as songs to help learn times tables and key facts.
From September we will be introducing French to Key Stage 2. They will be learning key vocabulary and useful phrases to help them engage in conversational French. The whole school will undertake a topic about France at some point in their two year cycle.
Here at Stakeford Primary School we aim to have a curriculum that inspires teachers to teach and children to learn.
